Reported by Margaret Dore; edited by Dana Pape.
On August 8, 1996, Dr. Amy Riskedahl spoke to a noon staff meeting of the King County Superior Court judges. Her topics: the link between vision disorders and juvenile delinquency; and her experience providing vision therapy to incarcerated juveniles.
Dr. Riskedahl reported that, statistically, 50% to 80% of incarcerated individuals, have vision disorders. She also reported on a San Bernadino study where the repeat offender rate for those who received individual vision therapy, was 60% less than for a control group (both groups also received other support, including tutoring).
Margaret Dore also spoke, describing her personal recovery with vision therapy.
The judges were provided with the letter of Cynthia Wilson, printed just to the left of this article.
The reception by the judges was positive. Moreover, Dr. Riskedahl has now been asked to return for a meeting when more judges can be present.
