DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

 FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS

Did you know? Severe complications of uncontrolled diabetic retinopathy can result in glaucoma too!

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS AMONG ADULTS IN the u.S.

Patients diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy suffer from dark floating spots (floaters) in their visual field, as well as steadily deteriorating and blurry vision

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy clinically manifests as the abnormal growth of leaky blood vessels protruding from existing blood vessels in the retina. These new blood vessels form because tinier retinal blood vessels are blocked due to high blood sugar levels, a complication of diabetes. The result? Fluid buildup (macular edema) leading to progressive loss in vision. Besides controlling modifiable risk factors (e.g., smoking or tobacco use, blood sugar control, healthy lifestyle changes are recommended to limit the damage propagated by diabetic retinopathy. Early intervention also help slow down vision loss.
