GLAUCOMA

FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS

GLAUCOMA IS THE 2nd LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS in the united states

Patients diagnosed with glaucoma suffer from improper drainage of the aqueous humor in their eyes, resulting in elevated intraocular pressure that gradually deteriorating vision

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of vision diseases that characterize  defined as the abnormal loss of retinal ganglion cells in the eye that results in long-term damage of the optic nerve. It is most often found amongst older adults and can be classified under two main categories: open-angle and angle-closure. In open-angle glaucoma (more common), the intra-ocular pressure (IOP) commonly increases over time. However, angle-closure glaucoma is characterized by a sudden increase of IOP, which is a dire medical emergency. The damage inflicted by glaucoma is irreversible, making it pertinent that the disease is spotted early during routine eye checkups, especially in underserved communities.

Many glaucoma patients exhibit unusually large optic cups. This clinical feature can be identified through retinal fundus image scans, as shown above
